My Name is Jake
When we found out baby number four was on the way we were ecstatic. When I was 15 weeks along we found out that we were having a boy. It was so exciting and the boys were so happy they got another brother and we were going to be the “boy house”. Minutes later the doctor found Jake’s heart defect (AV Canal Defect) in our ultrasound. We were told at that time that 2/3 babies with this heart defect had Down Syndrome. Five days later the results of testing were in and Jake indeed had DS. When looking for books and information about Down Syndrome to help explain it to our three little boys…there was nothing out there on their level. Everything we read was scary and I wish we only knew then that such a wonderful gift was coming. He changed us…completely…..and for that we are grateful. My Name is Jake was written to teach kids that Jake may have an extra chromosome- but he likes to do the same things they do and loves life in the same way—–WE ARE MORE ALIKE THAN WE ARE DIFFERENT. I truly hope we can get this book in schools and libraries across the world to teach kids that being a little different is not scary. Jake is just Jake. He is not his diagnosis…he is so much more than that. ..If you can be a friend to someone who is a little different your life may be fuller than you ever knew possible.
